Master of Arts Programme
Welcome to the Master of Arts Programme in Te Ara Poutama, the Faculty of Māori Development at AUT University. We have several majors:
- MA in Māori Development
- MA in Youth Development
- MA in Te Reo Māori
The Faculty of Business and Law also offers qualifications where you are able to major in Māori Development including the Master of Business in Māori Development, a Master of Professional Business Studies in Māori Development and a Master of Business Administration in Māori Development.
We also offer a Master of Philosophy and beyond that, a PhD Programme which we hope you will consider as a further progression on from the masters. For further information about the PhD you should contact the Programme Leader, Professor Tania Ka‘ai at tania.kaai@aut.ac.nz
We have 10 qualified staff in the Faculty, capable of supervising research theses.

How to enrol
You should complete an Application for Enrolment (AFE) form and send this direct to the Programme Administrator, Tania Smith along with:
- A copy of your passport or birth certificate
- A copy of your academic record or transcript
- A curriculum vitae
If you are applying for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL), then you should indicate this on the form. This will apply particularly for graduates of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo who will be considered for up to 90 points and four of the five papers which comprise the degree. The four papers are:
- 949007 Tuhinga Totoko
- 949010 Kōrero Whakarei
- 949012 Te Whanaketanga o Te Reo
- 949013 Tikanga
Copies of the AFE form can be obtained from Tania Smith. Email her or phone her with your postal address and she will send you a form immediately. Once you are enrolled you will be given further access to this website. You will be able to access the MA Student Handbook which will give you detailed information about the programme including essay guidelines, extension forms, plagiarism policy, etc. You will also be able to access Course Handbooks relevant to your enrolment including recommended reading, assignments, etc.
Basically this is a “one-stop-shop” designed to make things easier for students looking to pursue postgraduate study with us.
